History

Historia

The history of Aguascalientes dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when its territory was inhabited by various indigenous groups—including the Guachichil Chichimecas—who occupied the land for centuries. Due to its strategic location in the center of the country, the region was part of the historic Silver Route (*Camino de la Plata*), a major trade route used during the colonial era to transport minerals from Zacatecas to Mexico City.

The present-day city of Aguascalientes was founded on October 22, 1575, by Juan de Montoro under the name Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguas Calientes, with the aim of providing security for travelers and merchants passing along the Camino Real. Over time, the town prospered thanks to agriculture, livestock farming, trade, and—later—railway development, evolving into a major economic and cultural hub of the region.

On February 5, 1857, Aguascalientes was officially recognized as a free and sovereign state of the Mexican Republic. Since then, it has experienced steady industrial, commercial, and tourism growth, establishing itself as one of the states with the highest quality of life in the country. Today, it stands out for its historical heritage, entrepreneurial spirit, and renowned hospitality, as well as for hosting the San Marcos National Fair—considered the most important fair in Mexico and one of the largest in Latin America.
