History

The history of the Temple of Cieneguilla de San José and Our Lord of Villaseca is closely linked to the former San José de Cieneguilla Hacienda, whose origins date back to 1616. In that year, the lands were acquired by Vicente de Zaldívar y Mendoza and were later donated to the Society of Jesus in Zacatecas, becoming one of the most important estates in northern New Spain. The hacienda’s agricultural and livestock activities encouraged the growth of the community and created the need for its own place of worship.

The current chapel was built between 1751 and 1753 under the administration of the Jesuit Fray Sebastián de Vergara, who promoted the construction of a simple church of great historical and architectural value. During the 18th century, the hacienda was one of the most prosperous in the Bajío region, known for breeding Spanish horses and for its extensive farmland. The chapel became the spiritual center for the workers and residents of the area.

Devotion to the Lord of Villaseca reached Cieneguilla through the influence of long-standing traditions from Guanajuato. The image of the Christ of Villaseca forms part of one of Mexico’s oldest and most venerated devotions, associated with the religious tradition promoted by Don Alonso de Villaseca during the colonial period. Over the centuries, the image became an object of deep veneration and one of the most important religious symbols in the municipality of Asientos.
