Overview

The Temple of Our Lady of Refuge is the main religious, historical, and architectural symbol of the municipality of Tepezalá. Built during the 19th century by members of the local community, this majestic church reflects the deep faith and hardworking spirit of a population that grew thanks to the region’s mining activity. Its solid construction of quarry stone and local stone blends harmoniously with the semi-desert landscape characteristic of northeastern Aguascalientes.

Its Neoclassical façade stands out for the elegance of its lines, its bell towers, and the architectural details that adorn the building. Inside, an impressive dome decorated with fine ornamental details can be admired, along with artistic and religious elements that make the temple one of the municipality’s most important architectural treasures.

Dedicated to Our Lady of Refuge, the patroness of Tepezalá, this church is the center of the community’s main religious celebrations. Every year, during the patron saint festivities, thousands of worshippers and visitors gather to take part in pilgrimages, religious ceremonies, and cultural activities that keep alive a tradition with more than a century of history.

History

The Temple of Our Lady of Refuge is one of the most important religious monuments in northeastern Aguascalientes and serves as the main symbol of identity for the people of Tepezalá. Its construction began on April 6, 1872, when the first stone was laid under the direction of the ecclesiastical authorities of the time. From the beginning, the church was dedicated to Our Lady of Refuge, the patroness of the community.

Construction continued over several decades thanks to the effort, labor, and contributions of the residents of Tepezalá, a community whose economy was closely linked to mining. The stone used in the construction was extracted from the surrounding region, making it possible to build a solid church that blends naturally with the characteristic landscape of the municipality. By the late 19th century, religious activities were already being held in the church, although some construction work continued for several more years.

Today, the church stands out for its elegant Neoclassical architecture, its four bell towers, its remarkable decorated dome, and its valuable artistic heritage. Every July 4, festivities are held in honor of Our Lady of Refuge, a tradition that brings together thousands of worshippers through pilgrimages, novenas, and religious celebrations that form part of the cultural heritage of Tepezalá.
