Overview

The Sanctuary of the Lord of Tepezalá is one of the principal religious and cultural symbols of the municipality of Tepezalá, located in the northeastern part of the state of Aguascalientes. Situated facing the main square and surrounded by the traditional atmosphere of this mining town, the sanctuary houses the venerated image of the Black Christ—the Lord of Tepezalá—which is the object of deep devotion for thousands of the faithful from various municipalities and neighboring states.

Featuring sober and elegant architecture, the church has a single nave in the Neoclassical style, with stone columns and an atmosphere of serenity that invites prayer and contemplation. Its interior preserves simple décor and ornamental frescoes framing the main altar, which houses the image of the Black Christ—considered one of the region’s foremost spiritual treasures.

In addition to its religious significance, the Sanctuary of the Lord of Tepezalá is part of the municipality’s historical heritage; its mining tradition and location along the ancient routes of the *Camino Real de Tierra Adentro* contributed to its development. Each year, religious festivities and pilgrimages strengthen the community’s identity and make the church one of the state’s most emblematic landmarks.

History

The history of the Sanctuary and Parish of the Lord of Tepezalá is closely linked to the development of this old mining town in northeastern Aguascalientes. From the early 18th century onwards, mining activity fostered population growth and created a need for a church to provide spiritual care for the region’s inhabitants. Thus, a small chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist was established, around which the community that now constitutes the municipality of Tepezalá began to take shape.

Over time, devotion to the venerated image of the Lord of Tepezalá—also known as the Black Christ—grew among local residents and neighboring communities. This deep faith prompted the expansion of the religious site and the construction of the current sanctuary, which eventually became the municipality’s primary spiritual center. Its elegant Neoclassical architecture and location facing the main square transformed it into one of Tepezalá’s most iconic symbols.

For more than two centuries, the Sanctuary of the Lord of Tepezalá has been the setting for significant religious celebrations, pilgrimages, and patronal festivities that bring together thousands of the faithful from various regions of the state and neighboring areas. These traditions have strengthened the community’s sense of identity and belonging, making the temple one of the primary centers of devotion in northeastern Aguascalientes.
