Overview

The Sanctuary of Our Lord of Tepozán, located on the outskirts of the Magical Town of Real de Asientos, is one of the most distinctive religious and historic sites in Aguascalientes. The complex consists of the church and a former Franciscan convent, surrounded by a semi-desert landscape that contrasts with the serenity and beauty of the site. The sanctuary is dedicated to the Lord of Tepozán, regarded as the patron saint of miners and one of the most venerated images of Christ in the region.

Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, the complex preserves unique architectural features such as narrow passageways, small cells, different floor levels, and courtyards that reflect the daily life of the former Franciscan friars. The former convent, now converted into a museum, houses religious objects, mining tools, and evidence of the presence of Afro-descendant communities that lived in the region during the colonial period.

According to popular tradition, the revered image of the Lord of Tepozán was miraculously found in a tree known as tepozán, from which it took its name. Over the centuries, the sanctuary became an important center of pilgrimage and devotion for the inhabitants of the former mining town of Real de Asientos and other mining communities in central Mexico. Today, it forms part of the historical and religious heritage of Aguascalientes and is one of the most emblematic sites in the Magical Town of Real de Asientos.

History

The history of the Sanctuary of Our Lord of Tepozán dates back to the early 17th century, during the height of mining activity in Real de Asientos. According to tradition, the revered image of Christ was miraculously found among the branches of a shrub known as tepozán, from which it took its name. This event inspired deep devotion among the residents and miners of the region, who began to venerate the image of Christ as the protector of those who worked in the mines.

In 1627, the first chapel was built to house the image, and as devotion grew, a Franciscan convent and a larger church were later constructed. The complex was built in the early 17th century and served as a center of evangelization and as a residence for Franciscan friars. Its narrow passageways, small cells, and varying floor levels reflect the austerity and lifestyle of the religious order during the colonial period.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Sanctuary of the Lord of Tepozán became one of the main religious centers of the former mining district of Asientos. Mine workers visited the church to entrust themselves to the Lord of Tepozán, regarded as their patron saint. Devotion spread to other communities and gave rise to pilgrimages and festivities that have endured to the present day.
