Overview

The Templo del Sagrario—affectionately known by the people of Aguascalientes as “El Conventito” (The Little Convent)—is one of the most beautiful and iconic religious sites in the Historic Center of Aguascalientes. Located on Venustiano Carranza Street and adjacent to the current Víctor Sandoval House of Culture, it was originally part of the San Ignacio Convent complex belonging to the *Religiosas de la Enseñanza* (Teaching Nuns), from which it inherited its popular name. Construction began on July 3, 1850, and over time, it became the seat of the Sagrario Parish.

The temple’s façade stands out for its elegant eclectic style, featuring a strong Neo-Gothic influence. Its pointed, lobed-arch windows, along with stonework details, gargoyles, floral reliefs, and pyramidal finials, give it a unique appearance within the city’s architectural heritage. Inside, an atmosphere of serenity and quiet contemplation prevails, making it a favored location for prayer and religious celebrations.

Beyond its spiritual significance, “El Conventito” lies at the cultural heart of Aguascalientes, surrounded by museums, galleries, restaurants, and historic sites. Its proximity to the Casa de la Cultura, Plaza de la Patria, and other landmark buildings makes it an essential stop on the state’s religious and cultural route. The beauty of its architecture and the tranquility of its interior make this site one of the most cherished treasures of the region’s heritage.

History

The history of the Templo del Sagrario—popularly known as “El Conventito”—dates back to the mid-19th century. Construction of the church began on July 3, 1850, as part of the religious complex of the San Ignacio Convent of the *Religiosas de la Enseñanza* (Teaching Nuns), an institution dedicated to the education and upbringing of girls and young women. The presence of the nuns deeply influenced the social and cultural life of Aguascalientes, making the convent and its chapel one of the city’s most important centers. Over time, the local people began affectionately referring to the site as “El Conventito,” a name that has endured to this day.

During the second half of the 19th century, the church was enhanced with an elegant, eclectic-style façade featuring strong Neo-Gothic influences. Its pointed arches, rose windows, gargoyles, and ornamental finials gave it a unique character within the architectural heritage of Aguascalientes. Following the implementation of the Reform Laws, the former convent ceased to function as a religious community; over the years, it served various purposes, including use as a seminary and a school. Later, the building was adapted to house the current Víctor Sandoval House of Culture, while the church remained a center of Catholic worship and was subsequently established as the Sagrario Parish.

Over the course of more than 170 years of history, “El Conventito” has established itself as one of the city’s most cherished spiritual and cultural symbols. Its close connection to the House of Culture, Venustiano Carranza Street, and the Historic Center makes it a meeting point for faith, art, and tradition. Today, it stands as one of Aguascalientes’ most iconic churches and an essential stop on the cultural and religious routes of the *hidrocálida* capital.
