History

The history of the Plutarco Elías Calles Dam dates back to the first half of the 20th century, when the federal government promoted various hydraulic projects to strengthen agriculture and ensure water supply in different regions of the country. As part of these initiatives, this major infrastructure project was built on the Santiago River, becoming one of the most important dams in the state of Aguascalientes.

The construction of the dam profoundly transformed the lives of the residents of San José de Gracia. Due to the creation of the reservoir, much of the old town was submerged, making it necessary to relocate numerous families and rebuild the community in a new location. This event marked a decisive moment in the history of the municipality and in the lives of its inhabitants.

Over the years, the dam became an important resource for the agricultural, livestock, and tourism development of the region. Today, in addition to its hydraulic function, it is recognized for its scenic value and for being home to the iconic Broken Christ, one of the main tourist and religious attractions in Aguascalientes.
