Overview

Peñuelas Hacienda, located in the southern part of the municipality of Aguascalientes, is one of the oldest and most iconic historic estates in the state. Its origins date back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, when it was established to supply food and livestock to the mining centers of northern New Spain and to the emerging Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguas Calientes. Because of the rocky formations surrounding the area, the settlement became known as Peñuelas, a name it retains to this day.

For centuries, the hacienda was one of the region’s main centers of agricultural and livestock production. Its extensive territory once covered more than seven thousand hectares, and at the height of its prosperity it was home to hundreds of residents. The architectural complex preserves the Casa Grande, interior courtyards, granaries, and the majestic Temple of the Immaculate Conception, one of the most beautiful religious buildings in rural Aguascalientes. The property is also part of the historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.

The Former Peñuelas Hacienda offers a true journey into the past. Its historical, architectural, and cultural richness makes it an essential stop along the Aguascalientes Hacienda Route. Within its walls, visitors can still sense the splendor of colonial and Porfirian-era Mexico, making this site one of the state’s most important heritage treasures.

History

The history of Peñuelas Hacienda dates back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries, making it one of the first settlements established in the region, even before the founding of the Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguas Calientes. Originally known as San Isidro Labrador, it was created to supply meat, milk, corn, wheat, beans, barley, and chili peppers to the mining centers of northern New Spain and to the emerging settlement of Aguascalientes. The name Peñuelas arose from the many rocky formations surrounding the property and eventually replaced its original name.

Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the hacienda belonged to prominent families in the region and gradually expanded through the consolidation of the San Nicolás, San Antonio, and San Isidro de Peñuelas estates. In 1780, Manuel Díaz de León succeeded in uniting them into a single property. It later passed into the hands of the wealthy Count of Rul, who introduced the breeding of fighting bulls and transformed Peñuelas into one of the most prosperous haciendas in the Bajío region. During the 19th century, the estate reached an area of nearly seven thousand hectares and became an important agricultural and livestock center.

One of its most notable owners was Miguel Belunzarán, who commissioned the construction of the elegant neoclassical Temple of the Immaculate Conception next to the Casa Grande. The hacienda is also associated with historical and legendary figures such as Juan Chávez, a well-known figure from Aguascalientes who was born on the estate in 1831. During the Porfirian era, major renovations introduced Neoclassical and Art Nouveau architectural elements, many of which can still be seen today in its courtyards and façades.
