The Temple of the Lord of the Rays (Templo del Señor de los Rayos) is one of the most unique and striking religious sites in the city of Aguascalientes. Located in the traditional Guadalupe neighborhood—adjacent to the Panteón de la Cruz and Panteón de Los Ángeles cemeteries—this temple stands out for its extraordinary Modernist façade and religious symbolism, which is considered one of the most original in Mexico. Designed by architect Francisco Aguayo Mora and featuring sculptures by master artist Guillermo González, it represents a watershed moment in the state’s contemporary religious architecture.
The church houses a venerated image of the *Señor de los Rayos* (Lord of the Rays), a devotion passed down through generations of the faithful. Its spacious and understated interior invites quiet reflection and prayer, while the architectural complex impresses with the rich symbolism of its façade, featuring elements that represent the victory of Christ, the wounds of the Crucifixion, and the Crown of Thorns.
Beyond its religious significance, the Temple of the Señor de los Rayos is a jewel of Aguascalientes’ architectural heritage and one of the sites most frequently photographed by visitors and architecture enthusiasts alike. Its avant-garde style and the deep devotion it inspires make it an essential stop on the state’s Religious Route.
The history of the Temple of the Señor de los Rayos began in the mid-20th century, when growing devotion to an image of Christ—known as the Señor de los Rayos and brought from Temastián, Jalisco—created a need for a fitting structure to house it. Initially, the image was placed in a small crypt next to the Panteón de la Cruz in the traditional Guadalupe neighborhood. Over time, the faithful flocked there in increasing numbers to seek favors and give thanks for miracles, leading to the creation of a chapel and, subsequently, the current temple.
Construction of the temple began in 1956, marking a turning point in the religious architecture of Aguascalientes. The project was carried out by architect Francisco Aguayo Mora, while the sculptures and decorative elements of the spectacular façade were the work of master craftsman Guillermo González. Its innovative, modernist design broke with traditional styles, making the temple one of the most original religious structures in the country. The sculptural portal was completed years later, further enriching its unique symbolism.
Since then, the Temple of the Lord of the Rays (*Señor de los Rayos*) has established itself as one of Aguascalientes’ primary centers of popular devotion. Its extraordinary façade—considered one of the most original in Mexico—and the veneration of the image of Christ have made this site a landmark within the state’s religious and architectural heritage. Today, it is part of the Aguascalientes Religious Route and remains a symbol of faith for thousands of people.
