Historia

The history of Jesús María dates back to the colonial era, when small agricultural and livestock-rearing communities began to settle in the 17th century on lands located north of the then-Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de las Aguas Calientes. Thanks to the fertility of the soil and the availability of water, the region prospered rapidly, fostering the development of haciendas, ranches, and roads that boosted the local economy.

The formal origin of the municipality is linked to the founding of the Villa de Jesús María de los Dolores, established on July 24, 1701, with the aim of gathering the indigenous and mestizo families inhabiting the area and fostering the region’s growth. During the 18th and 19th centuries, agriculture, livestock farming, and trade were the primary economic activities, while the construction of churches and public buildings solidified its identity as one of the state’s most important communities.

Over time, Jesús María has managed to preserve its traditions while continuing to evolve. It is currently one of the municipalities in Aguascalientes experiencing the most significant population and economic growth, distinguished by its urban development, commercial activity, and cultural richness, as well as the traditional Chicahuales Fair—a festival honoring the history, faith, and customs of its residents that has become one of the state’s most emblematic events.
