Overview

Built with understated elegance, its façade reflects a blend of Neoclassical and Colonial styles that evoke the region’s history. Inside, the spacious *cantera* stone staircases stand out; leading to the main halls and serving as the visual axis of the interior layout, they are flanked by murals that recount pivotal episodes in the history of Aguascalientes—from pre-Hispanic times to the modern era—filling the walls with color and meaning.

The murals, created by local artists, provide cultural identity and transform the building into a living space of historical memory. The architectural complex serves not only administrative functions but also acts as a point of tourist and cultural interest. A visit allows one to appreciate the state’s artistic richness and historical legacy, as well as its significance to the identity of contemporary Aguascalientes.

Historia

The Government Palace of Aguascalientes is one of the state’s most important historic buildings. Construction began in 1665, when the priest Pedro Rincón de Ortega acquired the land to build a residence for the heirs of the Rincón Gallardo family. The project was completed in the 18th century, and for many years, the building served as a family mansion.

In 1842, the building became the Mesón de la Unión; years later, it passed into the hands of the City Council and subsequently the State Government in 1856. Since then, it has served as the official seat of the state government.

The palace stands out for its Baroque architecture, its red *tezontle* façade, and its pink quarry-stone balconies. Inside, the murals by Oswaldo Barra Cunningham—depicting historical and cultural episodes of Aguascalientes—are particularly notable. It is currently considered a historical, artistic, and political symbol of the city.
