Overview

El Saucillo Hacienda, located in the municipality of Rincón de Romos, is one of the most representative historic estates in Aguascalientes and an important landmark associated with the historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in the 17th century, this majestic hacienda played a fundamental role in the agricultural and livestock development of the region, becoming one of the main production centers in the northern part of the state.

Among its most remarkable features is its impressive hydraulic system, considered one of the most important of its time. Particularly noteworthy is its spectacular aqueduct, approximately 1,200 meters long and made up of 164 semicircular arches, which carried water to the mill and the hacienda’s production areas. The architectural complex also preserves the Casa Grande, a former company store, stables, warehouses, kitchen, dining room, and several rooms arranged around a beautiful central courtyard with traditional corridors.

Today, El Saucillo Hacienda has become one of the main attractions along both the Hacienda Route and the Aguascalientes Wine Route. Its historical richness, architecture, gardens, and open spaces offer visitors a unique experience where history and tradition come together with the hospitality and charm of the Aguascalientes countryside.

History

The history of El Saucillo Hacienda dates back to the 17th century, when it was established as an important agricultural and livestock estate in northern Aguascalientes. Thanks to its strategic location along the historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the hacienda became a key point for the movement of goods, travelers, and commercial exchange between central and northern New Spain. For several centuries, its lands were dedicated to farming and livestock production, contributing to the economic development of the region.

One of the features that distinguished the hacienda was its extraordinary hydraulic system, considered an outstanding engineering achievement for its time. The impressive aqueduct, approximately 1,200 meters long and composed of 164 semicircular arches, still survives today. It carried water to the mill and the productive areas of the hacienda complex. The property also included a defensive guardhouse with arrow slits, a company store, stables, warehouses, and an elegant main house arranged around a central courtyard.

Over the centuries, El Saucillo Hacienda witnessed important historical events connected with the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. Despite the transformations brought about by the 20th-century Agrarian Reform, much of the architectural complex was preserved, making it one of the best-preserved examples of the rural heritage of Aguascalientes. Today, the hacienda hosts cultural, tourist, and social events, keeping alive a legacy that forms part of the state’s historical identity.
