History

The municipality of Cosío traces its origins to the old agricultural haciendas established during the colonial period in the northern part of what is now the state of Aguascalientes. Thanks to the fertility of its lands and its strategic location along the Camino Real, which connected central and northern New Spain, the region began to develop through agricultural and livestock activities that encouraged the growth of small settlements.

During the 19th century, the arrival of the railway contributed significantly to the economic development of the area. The town gradually became an important transportation and trade hub between Aguascalientes and Zacatecas. Its growth was closely linked to farming, commercial exchange, and the arrival of new families who found opportunities to prosper in the region.

The name Cosío honors the memory of Alberto del Valle Cosío, a prominent benefactor who promoted various social and educational projects throughout the state. Finally, on November 30, 1938, Cosío was officially granted the status of a free municipality, becoming the youngest of the eleven municipalities that make up the state of Aguascalientes. Today, it preserves much of its historical identity, rural traditions, and cultural heritage that distinguish it within the Aguascalientes region.
