Historia

The history of the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption dates back to the early years following the founding of the city of Aguascalientes in the 16th century. Originally, a small parish church stood on this site, built to serve the religious needs of the first inhabitants and travelers passing through the region. As the population grew, the need arose to construct a larger and more imposing church.

Construction of the current cathedral began in the 18th century and spanned several decades. Its design combines Baroque and Neoclassical elements, reflecting the architectural influence of Mexico’s colonial era. Over the years, the church was expanded and embellished with altars, stained-glass windows, and artistic details that enhanced its religious and cultural significance within the city.

Over time, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption became the principal Catholic site in Aguascalientes and one of the state’s most important historical symbols. Today, in addition to being a place of worship, it is a tourist and cultural attraction that welcomes thousands of visitors each year.
